pls tell me how much on average the transmission ecu for an automatic a class costs new?

I have paid £1400 for a gearbox overhaul and was just wondering if I should ask them to change the ecu to save labour costs later on should the ecu need raplacing which I am advised they often do on a class automatic cars once they've done over 50k miles. I have a years guarantee on the gearbox but I'm worried I'll be back at the garage in six months with a faulty ecu!

What makes you think you need an ECU? The reason I ask is because my husband is a diagnostic engineer and he finds that an ECU very rarely needs replacing. The problem can be traced to wiring, connections, relays, etc. Have you had the problem diagnosed yet? Don't go to a Mercedes dealer - they charge the earth. Try and find a garage that specialises in Mercedes, like Merc Aid or similar.

I work for a big American auto manufacturer, programming ECU's. they cost £500 (GBP) a pop. That's what the dealer charges the customer but then you've got to get it programmed to the vehicle. I think that costs more. Why do you need to replace the ECU?

I couldn't say exactly,try the Merc dealer then on-line parts suppliers such as 'GSF car parts' and 'Euro car parts' I think you can also get second hand / reconditioned guaranteed units but you will have to search for those yourself. good luck.

Control unit is merc only, coded to the chassis in germany and then shipped over, 2nd hand control units dont work on others!!!

They can be repaired for as little as £300, they do fail and at an alarming rate, look and EPC and the part number changes for the control unit are extensive.
