We keep hoping that Mercedes would come up with pass-through seating like in the R-class. We need the towing capability of the GL. Does anyone out there have small children and own a GL? How do they access the back row? Thanks!

Unfortunatley the second row seats cannot go completely flat. They tilt forward only to get into the third row. You can sandwich the second row and leave it that way (so it looks like a table) but is not adviseable for safety reasons.
