Thinking of buying an older Mercedes and was wondering if anyone knew what the differnce was between the 2000 and 2001 model of the S430. They both look alike don't they?

there shouldn't be much, maybe small color and options changes. 01 and 02 have more reliability problems that 03-up. plus, with an 03-up, you get the updated headlights (projectors) and taillights, as well as other features and options. of course, the s500 has better leather (option for s430), power and creature comforts.

and if you're seriously considering an s class - get a starmark warranty or something similar, the airmatic suspension WILL go out on you, and repair costs are between $1500 to $7500.

The changes for 2001 were as follows:

The heated front seats were no longer standard, as they had been in 2000; they were only available as an option, so if this is important to you, make sure that the '01 you look at had the option added.

Additional options new for '01:
tire pressure monitor
sunshades for the rear side windows
radar-guided cruise control
power trunk closer

Other than that, no real changes for '01; the appearance didn't change until '03. Reliability is sub-par for the entire '00-'06 generation, but the earlier models were the least reliable.
